Visual Studio or SSDT Error or Activity Log

The other day our SSDT was unable to open the project  and we fixed it. One of the key is to find the error by looking it to the activity log. But what about, if there is not error or activity log. This post explains so nicely how to go about finding the error or activity log:

Something went wrong in SSDT (Visual Studio), and we got the following dialog:

Visual studio has encountered an exception. this may be caused by an extension. You can…

If you don’t see the activity log file then we should run SSDT / Visual Studio’s executable (devenv.exe) with the /log parameter.

There are two easy ways to run Visual Studio with the /log parameter.  First, from the command line:

“C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Visual Studio 11.0\Common7\IDE\devenv.exe” /log

Or by editing the shortcut you use to run it.

The error/activity log is at  C:\Users\Abc\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\VisualStudio\12.0.  The log file is ActivityLog.xml.
