SSDT Visual Studio Unable to open project or crashes when opening project

One of the developer was unable to open SSIS project today using SSDT 2012.

We try to do the basic operation by navigating to Tools =>

Options or Import and Export Settings.  It was unable to do so and generated the error or activity log.

Now navigate to error/activity log  C:\Users\Abc\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\VisualStudio\12.0.  The log file is ActivityLog.xml. When we did search on this error we received pointer towards Component Model Cache clearing.

We solved this problem by clearing Visual Studio Component Model Cache.

Just deleted this folder:

%AppData%\..\Local\Microsoft\VisualStudio\11.0\ComponentModelCache

or

%AppData%\..\Local\Microsoft\VPDExpress\11.0\ComponentModelCache

The version of Visual Studio you have is specified by the number e.g.

Visual Studio 2012 is 11.0 (as shown above)

Visual Studio 2013 is 12.0

Visual Studio 2015 is 14.0

Restart Visual Studio.

For those that don’t know, most of the time %AppData%\..\Local\ is the same as C:\Users\{yourUsername}\AppData\Local
